The SS Columbus was an important ship in the
early part of WWII. Here is a brief history: The SS Columbus was
commissioned in 1920 by the Norddeutscher Lloyd Company (NDL) Cruise
Lines as a passenger cruise line from Europe to the Caribbean. It was to
hold 1650 passengers and be the first to have an on board swimming
pool. Launched in 1924, the Columbus was run by White Star Lines (as
part of WWI reparations) , still under NDL ownership. At the time, it
was the fastest cruise ship in the world. The cruise ship ran until
1939. At that time, the ship, in the Atlantic Ocean, was surrounded by
British naval ships, who were by then at war with Germany. Rather than
be captured, the crew evacuated the 560 or so passengers and burned and
sunk the ship. A fascinating piece of little known early WWII history
